Working with David Heath MP & Local Councillors

Close shave for Tories

12.57.57pm BST (GMT +0100) Sun 4th May 2008

The Mendip North East County Council by-election - caused by the disqualification of the previous Conservative Councillor - almost resulted in a big upset for the Tories.

In the absence of a Labour candidate, the Liberal Democrat candidate and local resident Ian Hasell increase the Lib Dem share of the vote by 9.7% to 48.8% - the Tories hanging on by only 71 votes.

On a day when the Tories were flying high in other parts of England this was a great result for the Liberal Democrats in Somerton and Frome and was in no small part due to the excellence of Ian as a candidate.
