Firstly, we hope you are all well.
Secondly want to say a big Thank You to every one of you who are helping keep our community safe and well during this national crisis. This is a difficult period for all of us.
We wanted to let you know of the range of help that is available on many issues at local level.
There is now a single phone number for anyone in Somerset who needs Coronavirus-related support from our local councils. Anyone who cannot find help within their own community networks can use the helpline 0300 790 6275 from 8am to 6pm every day to get help and advice on:
- personal care and support including delivery of food and prescriptions
- support for the homeless
- transport to medical appointments
- waste collection and disposal
- emotional support if you’re feeling worried or anxious
- financial support.
Our district councils' advice on Council Tax, benefits, rent, homelessness, community services and support for businesses can be found here for South Somerset https://www.southsomerset.gov.uk/life-events/coronavirus-support/, and here for Mendip https://www.mendip.gov.uk/coronavirus.
Citizens Advice https://www.citizensadvice.org.uk/ and Mindline's emotional support helpline 01823 276892 is also there to help. Information on county services is at https://www.somerset.gov.uk/coronavirus/covid-19-latest-advice/.
Our councils are contacting potentially vulnerable people to see if they need assistance. Local community support networks have been formed by volunteers, and many can be found here https://covidmutualaid.org/local-groups/. Somerset Community Foundation have a fundraising appeal to help local charities and community organisations that need support - -https://www.somersetcf.org.uk/appeal, and Western Power Distribution also have a fund that local groups and councils can apply to https://www.westernpower.co.uk/customers-and-community/in-this-together-community-matters-fund.
There are many other active organisations and groups in our area, some of whom are listed on my councillor website https://adamboyden.mycouncillor.org.uk/.
Nationally our party and MPs are encouraging the Government to improve their response to this crisis, and have proposed a national support package for frontline NHS and social care workers – see https://www.libdems.org.uk/in-detail-frontline-support.
Please let me know if there is anything we can help with, if you need any support or have any questions. Your Lib Dem team are here to help.
